{"id":1610,"date":"2024-02-23T15:24:11","date_gmt":"2024-02-23T15:24:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/healthyretirementnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/23\/a-quarter-of-smokers-quit-within-a-year-or-two-of-menthol-bans-researchers-find\/"},"modified":"2024-02-23T15:24:11","modified_gmt":"2024-02-23T15:24:11","slug":"a-quarter-of-smokers-quit-within-a-year-or-two-of-menthol-bans-researchers-find","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthyretirementnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/23\/a-quarter-of-smokers-quit-within-a-year-or-two-of-menthol-bans-researchers-find\/","title":{"rendered":"A quarter of smokers quit within a year or two of menthol bans, researchers find"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv17a09001k29qe5l9l94bv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Menthol cigarette bans<strong> <\/strong>are effective at getting people to quit smoking, new research finds.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv2fl7d0018336hqwemggxu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The US Food and Drug Administration has said that a menthol ban is a\u00a0\u201ctop priority,\u201d\u00a0but public health advocates have accused the Biden administration of dragging its feet, and the ban has gotten caught up in election-year politics despite research showing clear health benefits.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bsw0004336hv2a9g275@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The new research, published Wednesday in the journal Nicotine &amp; Tobacco Research, looked at studies that have examined the effects of bans in more than 170 US localities, two states, several countries and the European Union.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bsw0005336hwu8oavrh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The researchers did a deep search of English-language studies on tobacco use that were published through November 2022.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv2kczu001a336hdkbgbdki@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The pooled results show that about a quarter of menthol smokers quit within a year or two when the substance is banned from cigarettes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bsx0006336houzsy7d3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            They found that of the menthol smokers who did not quit after bans were put into place, about half switched to non-menthol cigarettes, 12% switched to other flavored tobacco products, and another quarter found<strong> <\/strong>a way to continue smoking menthols.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bsx0007336hzrrrujdj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            National bans seemed to be most effective, the studies showed. Menthol cigarette smoking rates were lower in settings with national bans and highest when there were only local or statewide bans.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bsx0008336h6eofm9os@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The tobacco industry has argued that a nationwide ban could make it dangerous for menthol smokers who would seek out illegal cigarettes, leading to violent encounters with police. However, the research did not turn up any evidence that bans created surges of people who turned to a black market for menthol cigarettes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bsy0009336howaxu45w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cContrary to claims by the tobacco industry, we did not see an increase in the use of illicit products,\u201d study co-author Dr. Sarah Mills said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bsz000a336hxw85452v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis review provides compelling evidence that the US Food and Drug Administration should move forward with banning the sale of menthol cigarettes,\u201d said Mills, an assistant professor in the Department of Health Behavior at the Gillings School of Public Health.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bt0000c336hvybugxeu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Smoking is the\u00a0No. 1 cause\u00a0of preventable death<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in the US\ufeff. Even if just a quarter of menthol smokers quit, it could improve the health of thousands of people.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv20i3f00013b6hebbho87k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Although the number of people who smoke cigarettes in the US has fallen to one of the lowest levels in history, the proportion of those who smoke menthols has been increasing,\u00a0according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.\u00a0And the numbers of quitters among some demographics, including among older people, have fallen flat.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bt0000d336hsgc0ms5h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A ban would be of particular help to the health of communities of color and the LGBTQ+ community, both of which have been targeted by industry advertising for decades. A 2020 study\u00a0showed that although 43% of all adult smokers smoked menthols, more than 83% of\u00a0Black smokers\u00a0did. And a CDC study found that while 29% of heterosexual people smoked menthols, 36% of LGBT smokers did.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bt0000e336hjusvvegs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Menthol-flavored cigarettes are particularly appealing to children, studies show, so a ban could also stop new smokers from ever starting.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bt0000f336hpaklot6s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            More than half\u00a0of kids who smoke choose menthol cigarettes,\u00a0according to the CDC.\u00a0Studies have found\u00a0that children who smoked menthols were more likely to become regular smokers than occasional smokers.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bt0000g336hk4cdrwu9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Menthol itself isn\u2019t addictive, but menthol cigarettes are more attractive to new smokers, studies show, because the flavoring masks the harsh taste and smell that may put some new smokers off. Menthol also anesthetizes the throat, making it easier to deeply inhale the dangerous smoke.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bt0000h336hwmqqbx2s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen added to cigarettes, menthol sweetens the poison of nicotine, which makes it easier to start smoking and also much harder to quit,\u201d Mills said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bt0000i336h4eypxu6c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Previous tobacco control restrictions have also been highly effective at helping people quit, Mills said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bt0000j336halwnmfl5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cTobacco control is seen as a public health success story. We\u2019ve been able to reduce smoking rates markedly in the total population over the past several decades to get to a relatively low smoking rates overall right now,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bt0000k336h4l655d9a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But disparities in smoking rates and in smoking-related disease though have to be addressed, Mills said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv29c5200083b6hi56z9ncq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Black adults die at significantly higher<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>rates than White adults from smoking-related illnesses including stroke, heart disease and lung cancer. Black people make up 12% of the population in the US, but the community accounts for 41% of smoking-related premature deaths and 50% of the life-years lost associated with menthol tobacco product use between 1980 and 2018,\u00a0one study found.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bt1000l336hhgy33d9e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            If menthols were banned, the gap between Black and White\u00a0lung cancer deaths would close within five years,\u00a0a Council on Foreign Relations study found.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bt1000m336hftq7l0bg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Dr. Rafael Meza, an expert in tobacco epidemiology and control, said the new research comes at a pivotal time as the US considers a menthol ban.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/clsv1aa6w000y336huodw9rgn@published\" class=\"factbox_inline-small         factbox_inline-small__standard  \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">  <\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bt1000n336h60j2fzdp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt adds to the already very compelling evidence that banning menthol would result in fewer people smoking cigarettes and provide higher public health benefits, especially for populations that have pretty high rates of use, particularly Black Americans,\u201d said Meza, a distinguished senior scientist at BC Cancer Research Institute in Canada who was not involved with the new research.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clsv18bt1000o336hylah5qdk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Meza said he would love for the literature to show that bans encouraged everyone to stop smoking.
