{"id":1724,"date":"2024-03-20T15:11:10","date_gmt":"2024-03-20T15:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/healthyretirementnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/20\/epa-bans-last-form-of-asbestos-used-in-united-states\/"},"modified":"2024-03-20T15:11:10","modified_gmt":"2024-03-20T15:11:10","slug":"epa-bans-last-form-of-asbestos-used-in-united-states","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthyretirementnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/20\/epa-bans-last-form-of-asbestos-used-in-united-states\/","title":{"rendered":"EPA bans last form of asbestos used in United States"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx4u10m001eavp50lxecq5m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The US Environmental Protection Agency\u00a0said Monday\u00a0that it is taking a \u201chistoric\u201d step by banning ongoing uses of asbestos, which has long been linked to multiple types of cancer.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx4x9dp0005336hvqbp6sca@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The agency\u2019s announcement of the final rule applies to chrysotile asbestos, the only form of asbestos currently being used in or imported to the United States. It is the most common type of asbestos used in the world, used in car parts such as aftermarket automotive brakes and linings and other vehicle friction products and gaskets. It\u2019s been banned in 50 other countries.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx6rufw000a336hz2normod@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Asbestos is a thin, fibrous, naturally occurring material that is flexible and resistant to corrosion, electricity and heat. It\u2019s inexpensive, which led manufacturers and builders to use several forms of the material in cigarette filters, hair dryers and home insulation. Manufacturers dialed back<strong> <\/strong>the<strong> <\/strong>use of asbestos once scientists determined that the fibers could easily separate into tiny particles that could be inhaled into the lungs, causing damage.<strong> <\/strong>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx4x9dq0006336hud0kl0zb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While the use of asbestos has been declining for decades in the US, asbestos exposure is linked to more than 40,000 deaths in the US, according to the EPA.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx4x9dq0007336h7vdc93ew@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            People who are exposed to asbestos can develop lung cancer, mesothelioma, ovarian cancer and laryngeal cancer, studies show.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx4x9dq0008336h5ao11a8y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Calling it a \u201cmajor milestone\u201d for chemical safety \u201cafter more than three decades of inadequate protections and serious delays during the previous administration,\u201d the EPA celebrated the change Monday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx4x9dq0009336hhtl0e7m4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe science is clear \u2013 asbestos is a known carcinogen that has severe impacts on public health. President Biden understands that this concern that has spanned generations and impacted the lives of countless people. That\u2019s why EPA is so proud to finalize this long-needed ban on ongoing uses of asbestos,\u201d EPA Administrator Michael Regan said in a statement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx5sf0z0000336h1bvd7bgn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The EPA set different deadlines for different industries to transition away from asbestos.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx5wupx0002336hbl1mm9pf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For the auto industry, for brakes, linings, other vehicle friction products and<strong> <\/strong>gaskets, the ban goes into effect six months after the date of the final rule, which is 60 days after it appears in the Federal Register.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx5yxpv0004336hzx5yzsct@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The chlor-alkali industry, the main source of chlorine globally, uses asbestos diaphragms to make sodium hydroxide and chlorine, which the EPA says is<strong> <\/strong>\u201ccritical\u201d<strong> <\/strong>to disinfect drinking water and wastewater. The agency said there are other methods to produce chlorine, but the eight plants in the US that still use these asbestos diaphragms will have to find other methods to do their work. They will get at least five more years to make this transition.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx883do000g336h9wv3z2cy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The American Chemistry Council, a trade association that represents companies that use asbestos products, said in a statement that its Chlorine Panel<strong> <\/strong>provided the EPA with data that suggested it needed a 15-year transition timeline to \u201csupport an orderly transition and to avoid a significant disruption of chlorine and sodium hydroxide supplies.\u201d The council said it has not seen the final rule.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx87b07000e336h11q8poud@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The EPA said it will require strict workplace safety measures to protect workers\u2019<strong> <\/strong>health where there is a phaseout that is longer than two years.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx8da8j000i336hgtxs1k4k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The AFL-CIO, the country\u2019s largest labor federation that includes unions,<strong> <\/strong>applauded the EPA\u2019s ban for providing \u201clandmark protection\u201d for workers.<strong> <\/strong>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx9rdu400013b5vd5yho0fn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis action once more shows the deep commitment of the Biden administration to ensure working people remain safe and healthy on the job,\u201d the federation said in a statement. It added, though, that although it is a critical step forward, Monday\u2019s action does not eliminate all types of asbestos fibers and does not address \u201clegacy\u201d asbestos through the country\u2019s old buildings and infrastructure.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx9rw8800033b5veagb8cuj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe urge the EPA to move swiftly to address those risks as well,\u201d the AFL-CIO said.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/cltx52yla00053b6hk1onjl3r@published\" class=\"factbox_inline-small         factbox_inline-small__standard  \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">  <\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx6ejda0000336hqvrhju6c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The EPA also announced Monday that it is evaluating legacy uses of asbestos and asbestos-containing talc, a super-soft mineral that is often mined alongside asbestos.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cltx6hs790002336hctiq991b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Monday\u2019s ban is something Sen.
