{"id":1889,"date":"2024-04-24T15:10:34","date_gmt":"2024-04-24T15:10:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/healthyretirementnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/24\/cdc-issues-health-advisory-about-risks-of-counterfeit-or-mishandled-botox-injections\/"},"modified":"2024-04-24T15:10:34","modified_gmt":"2024-04-24T15:10:34","slug":"cdc-issues-health-advisory-about-risks-of-counterfeit-or-mishandled-botox-injections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthyretirementnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/24\/cdc-issues-health-advisory-about-risks-of-counterfeit-or-mishandled-botox-injections\/","title":{"rendered":"CDC issues health advisory about risks of counterfeit or mishandled Botox injections"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcpwfmb000jjenn64jqejpm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an advisory Tuesday about the risks of counterfeit or mishandled Botox injections after dangerous fake versions of the product have been found in several states.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcqddee00073b6jf25j2fxx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The CDC, the US Food and Drug Administration and state and local officials are working to investigate clusters of at least 22 women who have reported harmful reactions after receiving counterfeit Botox injections, injections from unlicensed or untrained providers or shots in places that were not health-care settings, such as spas or private homes, according to the official CDC health advisory.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcqddee00093b6jcqc2a5p1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As of Thursday, those incidents have been reported in California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York City, Tennessee, Texas and Washington. Among the people who reported symptoms, 11 were hospitalized, the CDC said, but none have died.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcqddee000a3b6jc3psew34@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The patients, ages 25 to 59, reported their symptoms between November and March, and most of them \u2013 91% \u2013 reported receiving Botox for cosmetic purposes, according to the CDC. Their symptoms included blurred vision, drooping eyelids, dry mouth, slurred speech, shortness of breath, fatigue and weakness. Seven of them were tested for botulism. Test results were negative for six, while one is still pending.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcqddef000b3b6jnh3dt5mu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            These incidents appear to be connected to products that have been purchased from unlicensed sources and then administered by either unlicensed or licensed providers, according to a previous FDA announcement. The agency warned health-care professionals that purchasing and administering counterfeit products puts patients\u2019 health at risk.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcqddef000c3b6jwvxhjb7q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The counterfeit Botox products may be identified by the lot number C3709C3 on the outer carton and vial, according to the FDA.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcqddef000d3b6j35oiftgw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The outer carton also may display the active ingredient as \u201cBotulinum Toxin Type A\u201d instead of \u201cOnabotulinumtoxinA.\u201d The carton and vial may indicate 150-unit doses, which is not a dosage made by the companies AbbVie or Allergan, the FDA said, and the outer carton may contain language that is not English.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcqddef000f3b6j55kgm35j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In Tuesday\u2019s advisory, the CDC noted that when botulinum toxin, known as Botox, diffuses around the site where it was injected, it can result in adverse effects.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcqddef000g3b6jgd9ju2hp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBotulism is the disease caused by botulinum toxin circulating in the blood and producing effects remotely from the injection site. There may be symptom overlap between the presentation of localized adverse effects from injection of botulinum toxin, especially in the head and neck, and the early symptoms of botulism,\u201d according to the advisory.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcqddef000h3b6j3wur3chi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cClinicians and health departments should consider the possibility of adverse effects from botulinum toxin injections in patients presenting with localized paralysis,\u201d the advisory says. \u201cClinicians should immediately contact their state, tribal, local, or territorial health department if they suspect botulism.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcqddef000i3b6jf4nqzez0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Botulism can be treated with an antitoxin, according to the CDC. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to get medical care quickly and early in the course of the disease. If the disease is left untreated, it may progress to paralysis and other complications.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcqddeg000j3b6jd7x9tcif@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBotulinum toxin should be administered only by licensed providers, using only recommended doses of FDA-approved botulinum toxin, preferably in a licensed or accredited healthcare setting,\u201d the CDC advisory says. \u201cProviders should be trained in the proper administration of botulinum toxin, practicing in accordance with state and local requirements.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcr9wat00003b6j8bvhqg5w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In response to the reports of counterfeit Botox, the companies behind the FDA-approved versions, AbbVie and Allergan Aesthetics, said in a statement that they are the only authorized suppliers of Botox in the United States.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcraubk00023b6jsogi2fcq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAllergan Aesthetics, an AbbVie company, has a comprehensive supply chain security program to ensure that all products manufactured are safe, secure, and sold through authorized distribution channels.\u00a0All reports of counterfeit product are thoroughly investigated by our team and in conjunction with law enforcement and public health authorities where appropriate,\u201d the statement says.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcrbdmg00043b6jn09257ic@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Providers and consumers can identify authentic Botox products by a tamper-evident seal on the packaging, the name \u201conabotulinumtoxinA\u201d listed under the brand name Botox and a hologram of the word \u201cAllergan\u201d on the vial label.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcqddeg000l3b6j1d5xmlul@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Botox is a brand name for botulinum toxin, which in small doses can temporarily treat medical or cosmetic concerns such as severe underarm sweating, chronic migraines, overactive bladder and facial wrinkles.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcqddeg000m3b6jlolr1nat@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBotox and its peer brands provide a dilute, precise, and consistent amount of botulinum toxin, whereas knock-off unregulated products are not reliably manufactured or subject to the same quality assurance, which can lead to over or underdosing,\u201d Dr. Michael Cameron, president and founder of\u00a0Cameron Dermatology\u00a0and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Health System in New York, said last week.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcqddeg000n3b6jbyqtssl2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When in the body at high levels, the toxin botulinum can cause the rare but serious illness\u00a0botulism or symptoms similar to those from the illness.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/clvcqew6s000x3b6jfd94jlh0@published\" class=\"factbox_inline-small         factbox_inline-small__standard  \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">  <\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcqddeg000o3b6jwxdsiogh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cSigns and symptoms of botulism include muscle weakness, vision changes, slurred speech, difficulty moving your eyes. An emergency would be if you start to have difficulty breathing,\u201d Cameron said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvcqddeg000p3b6jpaimjmta@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI personally recommend if you\u2019re getting Botox for your wrinkles, you go to a board-certified dermatologist. If you\u2019re getting Botox for your migraines, you go to a neurologist.
