Market in Wuhan, China \u2014 a site that\u2019s been described as an epicenter of early spread of Covid-19 \u2014 scientists say they now know exactly which species of animals were in the same area where investigators also found the most positive samples the virus that causes Covid-19.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut00042e6b1zsy9en6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Species present in the areas where the highest numbers of SARS-CoV-2 samples were found include raccoon dog, hoary bamboo rat, dog, European rabbit, Amur hedgehog, Malayan porcupine, Reeves\u2019s muntjac, Himalayan marmot and masked palm civet.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19bq4iy00002e6blgf6ka6l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The new findings add to strong but circumstantial evidence that the SARS-CoV-2 virus jumped from infected animals to humans and that the market was a&nbsp;central site&nbsp;of early spread.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut00032e6bnbg0l3m2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The researchers identified the species of animals at the market through a technique called metagenomic sequencing, which reads all the genetic material present in a sample and then sifts through to understand where it came from.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut00052e6b7icyg5la@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The analysis, which was published Thursday in the journal Cell, doesn\u2019t prove that the animals were infected by the virus, but their DNA was found very near the virus, sometimes on the same swab.&nbsp;That means it\u2019s a strong possibility the animals were infected at the market.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut00062e6bk6e37av6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Of the animals present at the market, rabbits, dogs and raccoon dogs are known to be susceptible to Covid-19 infections.&nbsp;Raccoon dogs have also been shown to transmit the infection, making them a strong candidate to be the animals that first passed the virus to humans.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm199d5br001e2e6b8i9i843g@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"studying-the-age-of-viruses\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Studying the age of viruses<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut00072e6b4y0eh0d9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The international research team behind the study also used the genetic material from samples found in the market to conduct an evolutionary analysis, a technique that helps them estimate when a virus first emerged and what its closest genetic relation might be.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut00082e6bujmxmnhe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s basically carbon-dating viruses,\u201d said senior study author Dr. Kristian Andersen, who is director of infectious disease genomics at the Scripps Translational Research Institute in La Jolla, California.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut00092e6b0zx7q4sg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            By understanding how quickly the virus that causes Covid changes or mutates \u2014 it acquires about two genetic mutations a month \u2014 it\u2019s possible to figure out approximately how old it is.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000a2e6b3huz0pup@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The researchers believe that the virus that sparked the pandemic emerged sometime between mid-November and mid-December 2019.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000b2e6bydb45zrq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Their analysis shows that SARS-CoV-2 virus present at the market emerged at the same time as the virus from the larger pandemic, suggesting that they are one and the same.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000c2e6b6f5tdij3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            If it had come from somewhere else first and then traveled to the market where its spread was amplified \u2014 as a lab leak theory of Covid-19\u2019s origin suggests \u2014 the timing of the emergence of the virus found in the market would have been different than the emergence of the virus that caused the pandemic, Andersen said. The pandemic virus would have an earlier birthdate.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000d2e6bql1hd4aw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Other lines of evidence point in the same direction.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000e2e6bfadu781u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Almost one-third of the first 174 people who got Covid-19 had a connection to the market, and many others without a direct connection lived around the market, within a city of 12 million people.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000f2e6bfoccgvcq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Andersen said that when he first saw how tight this clustering was, \u201cI was flabbergasted.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000g2e6b9o0mwo9f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When he started looking at the results of the hundreds of swabs taken in the market in January 2020, \u201clooking at what\u2019s actually happening inside the market, and I saw that clustering of environmental positivity, my brain was literally blown. I was like, \u2018I can\u2019t believe what I\u2019m looking at here,\u2019 \u201d Andersen said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000h2e6b40aq15le@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Another important clue that the market might be where the pandemic started is that both lineages of the virus that were circulating from the earliest days of the pandemic \u2014 the \u201cA\u201d lineage and the \u201cB\u201d lineage \u2014 are on the swabs collected at the market.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm199kwtw00012e6bv81rjnrr@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"accumulating-evidence-of-animal-origin\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Accumulating evidence of animal origin<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000i2e6bm383bg3n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Andersen said scientists have never had this much information, at this level of detail, for any previous pandemic.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000j2e6bokge54lo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The findings closely align with those of a similar analysis performed by Chinese scientists that was published in the journal Nature in 2023.&nbsp;The data used to conduct the analysis was briefly the subject of international intrigue when it was quietly posted in March 2023 to GISAID, a site where scientists share the genetic sequences of viruses for research.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000k2e6boibdh4hx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Professor Florence Debarre, a researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research, discovered the data in 2023 and quickly alerted other scientists.&nbsp;She is also a senior author with Andersen on this new study.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000l2e6bycljdv6e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhat this adds is a greater weight of evidence,\u201d Debarre said of the new study \u201cBecause as data keep accumulating, all the results still go in the same direction, which is an origin linked to wildlife trade in the Huanan market.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000m2e6b7i2fwl19@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            This study comes on top of several important scientific papers by the same research group that have been published in major journals pointing to an animal origin for the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000n2e6bzn76fu44@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Andersen knows that a lot of people will see his name on the new study about the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic and immediately dismiss its findings.&nbsp;He says he doesn\u2019t care.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000o2e6bl2t47005@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey will just look at the author list on the paper and say, \u2018Oh, yeah, we can\u2019t trust any of this,\u2019 right? So we don\u2019t even need to read the paper,\u201d Andersen said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000p2e6bjp3gie79@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Andersen has been one of the most prominent leaders of an international group of scientists who have been sifting through scientific evidence collected in the early weeks of the pandemic, trying to understand just how the global public health crisis started.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000q2e6bjg0tben1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Andersen has been the intense focus of government investigations and social media conspiracies, because he changed his mind:&nbsp;After initially believing that SARS-CoV2 came from a lab in Wuhan, that was manipulating similar viruses, he published a scientific paper explaining why the virus that caused the Covid-19 pandemic probably came from animals who were infected and then passed it to humans \u2014 an event called a spillover.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000r2e6bz5w44gcf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Animal spillovers like these are the way most pandemics begin.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000s2e6b7zhgcmqu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Proponents of the lab leak theory think that Andersen was pressured by top scientists at the National Institutes of Health to change his thinking.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000t2e6bpccl6uhb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Andersen said none of that is true.&nbsp;He simply did what scientists do when presented with evidence that contradicts what they initially thought: He changed his hypothesis.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000u2e6bwepw6w3z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Debarre says she too originally believed that the virus emerged from a lab.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000v2e6byt3f1p8j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cA lab origin is a possibility. It\u2019s a legitimate possibility for the origin of SARS-CoV-2 that needed to be seriously considered and that we did consider,\u201d Debarre said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000w2e6b7r2nusvt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Andersen, she said, is well known as the original \u201clab leaker.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm19961ut000x2e6boqnjubzh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cSo we were all open to the idea of a lab leak, except that we are scientists, and we go where the data go.
