Here\u2019s the right way to do it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wt4bib000mtsp2c9l4bhd4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A new study found that having your arm in the wrong position during blood pressure checks \u2014 either at home or the doctor\u2019s office \u2014 can result in readings \u201cmarkedly higher\u201d than when your arm is in the recommended position: appropriately supported on a table with the middle of the cuff positioned at heart level.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x00063b6mbg1o2n9y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            This suggests that not consistently having your arm positioned and supported appropriately during a blood pressure reading might result in a misdiagnosis of high blood pressure, which some experts worry could possibly lead to unnecessary treatment.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x00073b6mmc479i8k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The study, published Monday in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, found that having your arm resting in the lap during a blood pressure reading can lead to an overestimated systolic blood pressure measurement by 3.9 mm Hg and overestimated diastolic reading by 4 mm Hg. And having your arm hang by your side can lead to an overestimated systolic reading by 6.5 mm Hg and overestimated diastolic reading by 4.4 mm Hg.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x00083b6m7tqmg6mc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Blood pressure is measured&nbsp;in units of millimeters of mercury or mm Hg, which consists of two numbers \u2013 the upper or systolic reading and the lower or diastolic reading. A person is considered as having high blood pressure or hypertension&nbsp;if they have consistent readings of 130\/80 or higher.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x00093b6mn25qn449@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cHealth care providers need to be reminded about the importance of taking the time to do these steps properly,\u201d said the study\u2019s senior author Dr. Tammy Brady,&nbsp;who serves as vice chair for clinical research in the department of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and medical director of the pediatric hypertension program at Johns Hopkins Children\u2019s Center.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000a3b6mgp1x69mr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI just hope that it raises awareness regarding how important things like arm position are to blood pressure measurement accuracy,\u201d Brady said about the study.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000b3b6mb5lnz8oy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI also hope this study educates patients, empowering them to advocate for proper measurement when they\u2019re in a clinic setting,\u201d she said. \u201cBut also, because so many patients rely on home blood pressure measurements for hypertension diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment, I hope this educates them on how to properly position their arms because our findings absolutely extend to measurements in the home.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000c3b6mxuv2o3s1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The researchers, from Johns Hopkins University, recruited 133 adults from Baltimore, Maryland, between August 2022 and June 2023, to participate in the study. The adults, ages 18 to 80, were randomly assigned to have their blood pressure measured while their arms were positioned in three different ways: supported on a desk, as is the recommended standard practice; supported on their lap; or hanging by their side, unsupported.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000d3b6mhcvw5f20@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Each study participant underwent a total of 12 blood pressure measurements with their arms in each of those various positions.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000e3b6mcqxm1vz7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Among the participants, when their arms were supported on a desk as recommended by the standard clinical guidelines, the average of their blood pressure reading was 126\/74, the researchers found.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtkv0m001r3b6mrdui0trs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But when the participants\u2019 arms were resting in their laps during their readings, the average blood pressure reading was 130\/78, and when their arms were hanging by their sides, the average of their readings was 133\/78.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000f3b6mf9rd1r5p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI did not expect there to be that much of a difference when the arms were placed in the two alternative positions. We tested those positions because those are the positions that most people have their blood pressure measured, according to data and personal observations,\u201d Brady said. \u201cWe thought there\u2019d be a difference, but I was surprised by how much of a difference there was.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000g3b6mgtgaoe71@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The researchers wrote that there are several physiological reasons why blood pressure measurements could be erroneously higher when the arm is not adequately positioned or supported. A greater vertical distance between the heart and where the cuff is placed can increase hydrostatic pressure in the arteries, or the&nbsp;pressure of the blood against the wall, due to gravity\u2019s pull, leading to an overestimation of blood pressure. And an unsupported arm can lead to the muscle contracting, which may cause an increase in blood pressure.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm1wtdnzc001b3b6mjqfsq7ny@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"how-to-check-blood-pressure-accurately\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        How to check blood pressure accurately<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000i3b6mrgq4euzb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The new study findings are consistent with some separate previous research that has shown unsupported arm positions or the arm being positioned below heart level can overestimate a blood pressure reading.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000j3b6m7827ml5w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe know that arm position affects the blood pressure reading, what this study does is gives us a more precise measure of just how much this has an impact,\u201d Dr. Nichola Davis, vice president and chief population health officer at NYC Health and Hospitals, who was not involved in the study, said in an email.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000k3b6mrw8pusiu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis is seen in participants with all levels of blood pressure, but more pronounced in participants with elevated blood pressure. These are important findings because we diagnose and treat hypertension based on blood pressure readings, and these readings need to be accurate,\u201d Davis said in the email.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000m3b6m3jg6mosk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The researchers wrote in the study that the \u201clatest clinical practice guidelines emphasize several key steps for accurate measurement,\u201d including:    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/list\/instances\/cm1xwjgrd00013b6m9dbetmre@published\" class=\"list \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"list__items list__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">Wear the appropriate cuff size.<\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.1.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">Have your back supported.<\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.2.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">Keep feet flat on the floor with legs uncrossed.<\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.3.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">Have the appropriate arm position \u2013 the cuff should be positioned at heart level with the arm supported on a desk or table.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000n3b6mtc8zvugz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Wearing the appropriate cuff size is key because an improperly sized blood pressure cuff can distort blood pressure readings taken by automated blood pressure devices. One study, published last year in the journal&nbsp;JAMA Internal Medicine, found that using standard, regular-sized blood pressure cuffs resulted in \u201cstrikingly inaccurate\u201d readings if a patient required differently sized ones, particularly for participants who fit larger cuffs.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z0lysu00033b6mjh3igtob@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            There are some steps people should take before they have their blood pressure checked, said Dr. Gail Adler, a cardiovascular endocrinologist and co-specialist in the Hypertension Clinic at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital, who was not involved in the new study.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000o3b6mp7uyi59r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIn the 30 minutes before you take your blood pressure, you want no smoking, no exercise, no caffeine, no alcohol, and \u2026 no major arguments. Don\u2019t be psychologically stressed,\u201d Adler said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000p3b6mtdmhmo2k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThen what you want to do is you want to sit in the chair, get in the right position, and for five minutes, you relax, you don\u2019t talk, you rest your arm comfortably, you sit upright with your back straight, you keep your legs uncrossed and your feet flat on the floor. Make sure you don\u2019t have to pee, if you have to pee or urinate, that\u2019s going to raise your blood pressure,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd you\u2019re not supposed to talk when you take your blood pressure, and the cuff should be against your arm. So you don\u2019t want to put it over clothes.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000q3b6mmdpuada5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Because people often feel more calm and comfortable at home, \u201cwhat we\u2019re finding now is studies suggest&nbsp;that&nbsp;blood pressures measured at home are&nbsp;a better indicator of your usual blood pressure&nbsp;than blood pressures measured in the office,\u201d Adler said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000r3b6mzpz5ezzr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Blood pressure measurements are often \u201csuboptimally performed\u201d in clinical practice, which can lead to errors that subsequently and inappropriately alter doctors\u2019 decisions around managing a patient\u2019s blood pressure in about 20% to 45% of cases, according to the American Medical Association.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000s3b6met09imfa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAnecdotally, I think all of us on the study team have started to pay more attention to how our blood pressures are being measured. I\u2019ve certainly paid attention to how my kids\u2019 blood pressures are being measured,\u201d Brady said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm1wtbz6700133b6mjbnbff3l@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"we-shouldnt-make-hasty-judgments\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018We shouldn\u2019t make hasty judgments\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3x000u3b6m3p1dzfda@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Having high blood pressure raises the risk for&nbsp;heart disease&nbsp;and&nbsp;stroke, which are leading causes of death in the United States.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3y000v3b6mz50n14ua@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It\u2019s estimated that nearly half of adults in the United States have high blood pressure, but only about 1 in 4 adults with high blood pressure has their blood pressure under control, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1wtbc3y000w3b6myin8vcpo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI don\u2019t think that we are aggressive enough&nbsp;with the treatment of hypertension in America,\u201d Dr. Dave Montgomery, a cardiologist at Piedmont Healthcare in Atlanta, who was not involved in the new study, said in an email.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z0k1rz00003b6mubumiyhn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cHypertension is one of the commonest risk factors for cardiovascular disease and among the easiest to treat and control. But in someone with a diagnosis of hypertension, 5-10 points may signal that we don\u2019t quite have the&nbsp;control we seek,\u201d Montgomery said. He added that blood pressure can change minute by minute, due to physical factors and&nbsp;someone\u2019s psycho-emotional states.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z0uoe0000a3b6mp7oviozo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis means that in general we shouldn\u2019t make hasty judgments about one blood pressure reading.
