{"id":2555,"date":"2024-11-15T15:12:58","date_gmt":"2024-11-15T15:12:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/healthyretirementnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/15\/high-rates-of-preterm-birth-and-infant-deaths-get-the-us-another-d-grade-its-a-travesty\/"},"modified":"2024-11-15T15:12:58","modified_gmt":"2024-11-15T15:12:58","slug":"high-rates-of-preterm-birth-and-infant-deaths-get-the-us-another-d-grade-its-a-travesty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthyretirementnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/15\/high-rates-of-preterm-birth-and-infant-deaths-get-the-us-another-d-grade-its-a-travesty\/","title":{"rendered":"High rates of preterm birth and infant deaths get the US another D+ grade: \u2018It\u2019s a travesty\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6hw9r002g2dqq6g9c2aao@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Being rushed to a hospital nearly two hours away, in the middle of a dangerous spring storm \u2013 with fear in her heart and amniotic fluid leaking down her leg \u2013 was not how Ashley O\u2019Neil expected her first pregnancy to go.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe00063b6miwqum16r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At 21 weeks pregnant, O\u2019Neil was having some unusual vaginal bleeding.<strong> <\/strong>With growing worry,<strong> <\/strong>she and her husband, Jorge, visited the nearby community hospital in rural Maryland where she had been receiving care during her pregnancy.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe00073b6mo40tynx2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Once they arrived at the local hospital, O\u2019Neil asked to be evaluated by an ob\/gyn.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe00083b6mup5k7e57@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey took me right up to triage,\u201d she said. \u201cI was there for hours before a doctor actually came in to see me. And the whole time, my husband is yelling, \u2018Where\u2019s an ultrasound? She needs an ultrasound! What\u2019s going on?\u2019 \u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe00093b6mz2p1vyio@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A physician finally entered the room where O\u2019Neil was waiting and started to perform a vaginal exam. That\u2019s when she saw the doctor\u2019s jaw drop.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000a3b6m08jfbtcl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            O\u2019Neil\u2019s<strong> <\/strong>amniotic sac, the fluid-filled structure that surrounds a growing fetus, was exposed. When someone goes into labor, the sac typically ruptures, also known as their water breaking. But with O\u2019Neil\u2019s sac exposed, she was at increased risk of complications, including premature rupture, possibly leading to preterm labor.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000c3b6my4u1tm7y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The small community hospital didn\u2019t have the resources to support the preterm birth.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000d3b6md6yjpr7c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And so the frantic two-hour drive began. O\u2019Neil was taken to a larger hospital via ground transport, as the weather was too stormy for her to be flown out, she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000f3b6med2uwmn5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            O\u2019Neil\u2019s experience is just one example of the challenges many mothers and babies face when living in US counties that are considered to be \u201cmaternity care deserts,\u201d in which there is limited or no access to robust maternity care.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000g3b6mx7st485a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When O\u2019Neil arrived at the larger hospital, her son Vinson was born preterm, at 21 weeks.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000h3b6m40va68ha@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cHe was born with a beating heart, 15 ounces. I like to say that he died in my arms, but I don\u2019t think he quite made it there,\u201d O\u2019Neil said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ghy5vn00003b6mwwnvqpxr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She and her husband had Vinson baptized at the hospital after he died.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gajetk00013b6md2ogemyw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Then, less than six hours after giving birth, O\u2019Neil was wheeled through the labor and delivery unit to go home.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000j3b6m1ndnu9en@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On the way to the exit, she could hear the cries of all the other babies in the unit.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm3gh5tjb00013b6mt9vmiecg@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-leading-cause-of-babies-dying\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        A leading cause of babies dying<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000l3b6mx9evjv3o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Preterm birth is a leading cause of infant deaths in the United States.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000m3b6m8o26nw0c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For every 1,000 babies born in 2023, about six died, according to provisional data released Thursday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The data showed that the infant death rate last year \u2013 5.6 deaths per 1,000 live births \u2013 was unchanged from the rate in 2022.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000n3b6maxgstucj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The rate of preterm births \u2013 in which babies are born before 37 weeks gestation \u2013 also remained at a high rate of 10.4% last year, unchanged from 2022, according to the infant and maternal health nonprofit March of Dimes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000o3b6mgl9rtwty@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThat means that over 370,000 babies \u2013 that\u2019s 1 in 10 babies \u2013 are born too early,\u201d said Dr. Amanda Williams, interim chief medical officer for March of Dimes. Racial disparities persist, she added; for Black people, the preterm birth rate is 1.5 times higher than the rate among all other babies.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000q3b6mq2gzk7gj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In its annual \u201creport card\u201d on US maternal and infant health, released Thursday, March of Dimes gave the United States a D+ grade for its high preterm birth rate, marking the third year in a row in which the nation has earned that grade.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000r3b6mhyjunzgz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Among the 100 US cities with the highest numbers of live births, one-third were given an F grade in the report for their high rates of preterm birth last year.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000s3b6mr13wwei3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Detroit had the highest rate, with 15.6% of births coming too early, followed by Cleveland at 14.8% and Mobile, Alabama, at 14.6%, according to the report.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000t3b6motetlbg2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Many of the regions with high preterm birth rates are maternity care deserts, Williams said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000u3b6m9vbjid72@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIf people are unable to access care, they are not going to have adequate prenatal care,\u201d she said. \u201cThings like inadequate prenatal care is a major driver of preterm birth.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000v3b6mo2wjjthp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            To improve access to care, she added, March of Dimes supports the expansion of Medicaid, a major part of the Affordable Care Act that has been associated with lower rates of maternal deaths.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000w3b6mkioqd5ja@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe know that prenatal care is often coming through Medicaid, and if there is not good Medicaid policy in certain areas, then that is going to be a driver\u201d of preterm birth rates, she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000x3b6mg7rqy1kt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The US cities with high preterm birth rates also are \u201careas where there are many chronic conditions and patients living with a greater number of things like hypertension, diabetes, obesity \u2013 those are all drivers of preterm birth as well,\u201d Williams said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe000z3b6m8slx7m8u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The cities in the report with the lowest preterm birth rates were Ramapo, New York, at 5.2% and Irvine, California, at 7% \u2013 both were given A grades \u2013 followed by Gilbert, Arizona, at 7.8%, which earned an A- grade.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm3g9etk100333b6m1zla6g8u@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"were-not-making-any-headway-on-this\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018We\u2019re not making any headway on this\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe00103b6mbg5vlk2j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The high rates of preterm birth that persist in the United States are a \u201ctravesty,\u201d said Lori Tremmel Freeman, chief executive officer for the National Association of County and City Health Officials, who was not involved in the March of Dimes report.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe00113b6m93e3ow7m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s a travesty that as a developed nation, we have these extraordinarily poor outcomes around maternal morbidity and mortality, infant prematurity and deaths, and that the disparities continue and are wide with regard to White people and Black and Brown people. We\u2019re not making any headway on this, and we need some really targeted prevention tactics and other services to address this,\u201d Freeman said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe00123b6me6w556h4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt is a complicated issue, because this involves both ensuring that a new mom is cared for, not only during her pregnancy, but that she comes into the pregnancy healthy,\u201d she said. \u201cOften in rural and other economically disadvantaged areas, they don\u2019t have the providers in place. It\u2019s hard to get access to health care. It\u2019s hard for working mothers to get to prenatal care. So there\u2019s a lot of contributing factors here, and it\u2019s going to take the whole of the health system \u2013 including public health and health care \u2013 to actually turn the corner and reverse some of these outcomes.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe00143b6m75oy6med@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            To improve the state of maternal and infant health and to lower rates of preterm birth, March of Dimes has recommended that more states provide 12 weeks of paid family leave, require Medicaid to reimburse for doula care, develop committees to review and study maternal and infant deaths and expand access to midwives, among other actions.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe00153b6mv9u9ajfa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe know that when a low-risk pregnancy is supported by a midwife, that it is associated with lower risks of preterm birth,\u201d Williams said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe00163b6m0mfoe77d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some research suggests that midwifery care could reduce about two-thirds of maternal and infant deaths and significantly decrease risks of severe complications associated with pregnancy or childbirth, said Amanda Shafton, the national midwifery director of Ob Hospitalist Group.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g9dl7q002x3b6m1tob9tsc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIn the United States, there are only 4 midwives for every 1,000 live births, while other high-income countries see between 30-70 midwives per 1000 births. The countries with the lowest maternal mortality rates are those who prioritize midwifery-based care, with the vast majority of babies being delivered by midwives,\u201d Shafton, who was not involved in the March of Dimes report, wrote in an email.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g9dl7r002y3b6m6tzpvvt4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cTo actively involve nurse-midwives in the fabric of obstetrical care in the United States, changes are needed across the board,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s essential to advocate for hospital bylaw changes, increased opportunities for collaboration between midwives and OB-GYNs, and updated regulations on state and federal levels to allow nurse-midwives to practice to the fullest extent of their education and licensure.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g9dl7r002z3b6mhzu94jim@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Shafton added that it\u2019s important to \u201cincrease the midwifery workforce\u201d and \u201cachieve equitable payment models\u201d for midwives, from public and private insurance as well as individual salaries.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe00183b6mn6ipxv9m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            March of Dimes also recommends that pregnant people discuss the benefits of low-dose aspirin with their providers to reduce the risk of preterm birth, especially if they\u2019re at higher risk of a dangerous condition called<strong> <\/strong>preeclampsia.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe00193b6mkvdcj7d1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt is absolutely probably my favorite and most impactful intervention, because it\u2019s so simple. You can go to your local pharmacy and purchase over-the-counter 81-milligram low dose aspirin and take it with prenatal vitamins every day from about 12 weeks to the end of pregnancy to decrease preeclampsia and preterm birth in patients who are at risk for preeclampsia,\u201d Williams said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe001a3b6mdl4w4kp5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhat we encourage is that all patients get educated about it. All prenatal care providers screen for it. And if the patient is at risk, and many patients are, then they take it on a daily basis, from approximately weeks 12 through the end of pregnancy,\u201d she said. \u201cThere are many different risk factors that should be discussed with one\u2019s prenatal care provider.\u201d<strong> <\/strong>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gavhl200003b6m4p7hnsn1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Those risk factors include being older than 35, using in vitro fertilization, being of Black race due to exposure to the stress of systemic racism, having a low income, experiencing your first pregnancy, having twins or triplets or already having a chronic health condition like high blood pressure.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ggpulf00003b6m3mstv6io@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Telehealth also could be a way to help expectant mothers, O\u2019Neil said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ggx6ei00063b6m8yntraco@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cEvery pregnant woman who lives in a maternal health care desert should be provided with access to a health care app that is monitored by remote providers. In this app, she can track how she is feeling and if she is having any symptoms like edema or headaches. She can ask questions,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ggy2n2000b3b6mtzjx0l0d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI also think that they should go home with a blood pressure machine,\u201d she said, especially those with an increased risk of preeclampsia. \u201cSo they can input their vitals daily, and the system can alert providers when the readings are outside the normal parameters. In addition, utilizing mobile health vans to conduct prenatal visits is crucial in increasing access.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm3gapvtm00033b6mk7uvvhgc@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"ill-fight-for-as-long-as-you-want\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018I\u2019ll fight for as long as you want\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe001c3b6mxhyjsn8x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            O\u2019Neil said she sees it as her calling to raise awareness around preterm birth and the solutions needed to reduce the risks.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe001d3b6mzeoiif1w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Shortly after giving birth to Vinson preterm in May 2016, O\u2019Neil became pregnant with her second son, Kolin. In April 2019, Kolin was born at the same small community hospital where O\u2019Neil was seen during her previous pregnancy.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe001e3b6m1xszqo9i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            With her second pregnancy, the hospital again wanted to transfer her to the larger hospital \u2013 but it was too late. \u201cThe labor came too quick,\u201d O\u2019Neil said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe001g3b6mixw2zgw6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She had an emergency C-section.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe001i3b6mebbw2n7l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen I woke up from surgery, I was scared to look around or ask, \u2018Where\u2019s my baby?\u2019\u201d O\u2019Neil said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe001j3b6m5bdd7n4w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kolin was delivered preterm, but the medical team was unable to intubate him. \u201cThey gave him manual breaths for an hour, until the flight came to transfer him,\u201d O\u2019Neil said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe001l3b6mwibdpniu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kolin was transferred to NICU at the larger hospital, two hours away.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe001m3b6m0ima6nk2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe didn\u2019t know that he was going to make it,\u201d O\u2019Neil said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ghehqr00063b6mxprh2ttb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While visiting Kolin in the NICU, she whispered to him, \u201c \u2018Look, if you want to go, you can go, but if you want to fight, I\u2019ll fight for as long as you want to fight.\u2019 \u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe001n3b6m2c1v3jiz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kolin survived and came home six months later.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe001p3b6m9uv9lk08@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, along with other conditions, and he has a feeding tube. But O\u2019Neil said his diagnoses don\u2019t keep him from enjoying life. With specialized care, physical therapy and speech therapy, her son has been thriving.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe001q3b6mtba61cp3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But shortly after O\u2019Neil\u2019s family celebrated Kolin coming home, they faced another tragedy: the death of O\u2019Neil\u2019s husband, Jorge.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe001s3b6m5uy7ayzn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIn a four-year span, my son died, my second son was born four months early, spent six months in the NICU, and then my husband died four years from the same month as my first son died,\u201d O\u2019Neil said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe001t3b6mu5swc4rn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In her grief, O\u2019Neil focused on uplifting other NICU families by launching a podcast called \u201cAsk a NICU Mama\u201d and writing a book titled \u201cIt\u2019s a NICU World.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3g6k8oe001u3b6m051ewkme@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            O\u2019Neil\u2019s mission has been to show that if she can \u201csurvive and not go completely crazy,\u201d others can find hope too, she said. \u201cI know life can get dark and heavy and feel like you\u2019re suffocating at times, but I just want to show that if I can make it, so can someone else.\u201d    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/cm3g6ksip001y3b6micqh3kgg@published\" data-component-name=\"factbox\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"factbox_inline-small factbox_inline-small__\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__item inline-placeholder\">Sign up here to get <strong>The Results Are In with Dr. Sanjay Gupta<\/strong> every Friday from the CNN Health team.<\/li>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gba1vk00033b6mjzc47lj1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After she had two premature births three years apart \u2013 with one resulting in her elder son\u2019s death and the other leaving her younger son with lifelong disabilities \u2013 the nation\u2019s ongoing high preterm birth rate breaks her heart, O\u2019Neil said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gguoco00013b6mo5gvzi7v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen a child is born prematurely, it does not just affect that child or that family, but it affects our society as a whole. Do you know how many resources are used in order for my child to thrive? Raising him takes so much of me, in ways that mothers of neurotypical children could never understand,\u201d O\u2019Neil said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ggv1yi00033b6m90a3xftt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI had to leave my job as a family nurse practitioner working in a busy, understaffed medical clinic because my son needed me at home.
