This is the first human death from bird flu in the US.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5li6dzv00073b6m3qm5hgv4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The person, who was over 65 and reportedly had underlying medical conditions, was hospitalized with the flu after exposure to a backyard flock of birds and to wild birds.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5lj0p8k000i3b6mzgqq4kqm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Louisiana health officials said that their investigation found no other human cases linked to this person\u2019s infection.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/cm5lj2lp800143b6mmnjdqaky@published\" data-component-name=\"factbox\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"factbox_inline-small factbox_inline-small__\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__item inline-placeholder\">Sign up here to get <strong>The Results Are In with Dr. Sanjay Gupta<\/strong> every Friday from the CNN Health team.<\/li>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5lj0p8k000j3b6mwz3q099r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The patient was infected with the D1.1 clade of the bird flu virus, a strain that is circulating in wild bird and poultry. It\u2019s different from the variant that\u2019s circulating in dairy cattle.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5lj0p8k000k3b6mhmg6cyac@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The CDC reported in late December that a genetic analysis of the virus that infected the patient found changes expected to enhance its ability to infect the upper airways of humans and spread more easily from person to person. Those same changes were not seen in the birds the person had been exposed to, officials said, indicating that they had developed in the person after they were infected.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5lj0p8k000l3b6makiikn78@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Although the overall risk to the public remains low, people who keep chickens and other birds in their backyards are at higher risk for bird flu, as are workers on dairy and poultry farms.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5lj0p8l000m3b6mfu3dtby1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            People who work with animals, or who have been in contact with sick or dead animals or their droppings, should watch for breathing problems and red, infected eyes for 10 days after exposure. If they develop symptoms, they should tell their health care provider about their recent exposure.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5lj0p8l000n3b6mlon7pgz9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Other ways to stay safe include:    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/list\/instances\/cm5lj1nof000w3b6myxuc6edk@published\" class=\"list \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"list__items list__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">Do not touch sick or dead animals or their droppings, and do not bring sick wild animals into your home.<\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.1.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">Keep your pets away from sick or dead animals and their feces.<\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.2.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">Do not eat uncooked or undercooked food. Cook poultry, eggs and other animal products to the proper temperature, and prevent cross-contamination between raw and cooked food.<\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.3.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">Avoid uncooked food products such as unpasteurized raw milk or cheeses from animals that have a suspected or confirmed infection.<\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.4.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">If you work on poultry or dairy farms, talk to a health care provider about getting your seasonal flu vaccination.
