I couldn\u2019t do it. It wasn\u2019t there. Didn\u2019t feel it.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2q0007356ms1vawtqq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Something kept nagging at me, and it took some time to finally figure out what it was.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2q0008356mbfecku2d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It\u2019s the idea that this article would be labeled \u201copinion\u201d or \u201ceditorial\u201d in the first place.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2q0009356ml4k3xalh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Sure, there are some topics that seem to lend themselves appropriately to opinion pages. Vaccines, however, which have prevented 6 million deaths every year worldwide and have fundamentally changed modern medicine, should not be on that list.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2q000a356m4yrlrzfm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The benefit of vaccines is not a matter of opinion. It is a matter of fact.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000b356mydjfzbe2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Studies, including a meta analysis of 1.2 million children in 2014, show no link between vaccines and autism. That is not a matter of opinion. It is a matter of fact.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000c356mot9y4hf3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That you are 100 times more likely to be struck by lightning than to have a serious allergic reaction to the vaccine that protects you against measles is not a matter of opinion. That is also a matter of fact.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000d356m5lo0y8xp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Facts should matter, and science should win, but after 13 years as a medical reporter, I know it is not that simple.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000e356m3l1b62kq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Science often loses the zeal argument to ideology, and in some ways, it is easy to understand why.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000f356mqh645kh2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At the heart of the vaccine argument is the awesome challenge of trying to prove a negative.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000g356m2ix29gjx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            If you or your child never gets the disease the vaccine was designed to prevent, there is no surprise. There is no headline. Life goes on.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000h356mobnf8728@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The flip side, though, is the one-in-a-million child (literally, 1\/1,000,000) who has a serious adverse reaction. It is likely to make the news, confirm the worst fears and lead to the enlistment of an army in the fight against vaccines.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000i356m7qr4udsq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It is worth pointing out that 12 out of 10,000 people who take an aspirin are at risk of intracerebral hemorrhage, or bleeding in the brain. People who regularly take too much acetaminophen are the largest group of people hospitalized for acute liver failure. And, on average, one person in the United States dies every year from H20 intoxication, or drinking too much water. And yet no armies have formed against aspirin, Tylenol or water.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000j356mmg7s23b5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            David Katz, director of the Yale University Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center, wrote that it makes no more sense to rant against vaccines because you heard of someone who might have had an adverse reaction than to stop walking because you heard about a pedestrian struck by a car.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000k356mz3pkxr5r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In many ways, it is a luxury to be able to have this discussion at all.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000l356mpjtayjlj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Having spent time in West Africa covering the Ebola outbreak, I saw how people hoped, wished and prayed for a vaccine \u2013 to no avail.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000m356m7ycpeq0g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On the other hand, the measles vaccine is readily available, and yet vaccination rates in certain areas of the United States are similar to the refugee camps I have visited in Haiti, Pakistan and Jordan.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000n356mk37cnfam@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Yes, parents have a choice in this country.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/cm6i5h7md00043b6mggsa9z8p@published\" data-component-name=\"factbox\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"factbox_inline-small factbox_inline-small__\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__items factbox_inline-small__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"factbox_inline-small__item inline-placeholder\">Sign up here to get <strong>The Results Are In with Dr. Sanjay Gupta<\/strong> every Friday from the CNN Health team.<\/li>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000o356mtxkrp9cz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It is a choice that so many others around the world will never have.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000p356m3l5l2nf4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Of course I vaccinated my children. Didn\u2019t think twice. Not a big fan of the measles or mumps or rubella \u2013 to name a few very preventable diseases.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000q356mrifgqtgo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And here is where I may lapse for a moment into opinion.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000r356mb6sr1y1b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The anti-vaccination argument is often snugly wrapped in the \u201cI love my kids\u201d sentiment. And I find it, well, a little insulting.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1oh2r000s356mx842exb1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            To suggest that anyone who vaccinates their kids doesn\u2019t love them is a whole new level of lunacy. But here is the fact of the matter, for me.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6i1tuju0013356mnfmszmbd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It\u2019s not just because I love my kids that I vaccinated them.
