Kennedy Jr. over his various controversial statements including his stance on vaccines during his confirmation hearing to be President Donald Trump\u2019s health and human services secretary, and most left feeling overwhelmingly unsatisfied by the answers they received.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb100073b6m3ctzzwjt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Democratic lawmakers confronted Kennedy with previous statements he had made to press him on his role in a deadly measles outbreak in Samoa in 2019, his views on Covid-19, and his previous claims falsely linking vaccines to autism in children. Throughout the hearing, the Democrats repeatedly asked Kennedy to make commitments that he would not purge employees for political reasons or use his perch to personally benefit financially, without getting clear answers.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb100083b6mm1zl3xst@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Republicans meanwhile, seemed largely receptive to Kennedy even though his past stances \u2013 particularly on abortion \u2013 do not align with their conservative ideology.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb100093b6m944lmndf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Given the narrow majorities in the Senate, Republicans can only afford to lose three GOP senators, and some have yet to say how they will vote. There are some areas in Kennedy\u2019s record that overlap with Democrats, but no Democratic senator has declared they will back him.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000a3b6m4shvzfk7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Wednesday\u2019s tense hearing in front of the Senate Finance Committee was Kennedy\u2019s first test, and he will face off against the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Thursday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000b3b6m22kjn2qs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For his part, Kennedy tried to downplay his anti-vaccine rhetoric and other controversial stances regarding public health and rebuked statements that he is a vaccine skeptic despite an extensive, recorded history of his linking vaccines to autism in children.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000c3b6m7qxijscw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIn my advocacy I have often disturbed the status quo by asking uncomfortable questions. Well, I won\u2019t apologize for that,\u201d Kennedy said. \u201cWe have massive health problems in this country that we must face honestly.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm6icjb7700233b6mec8mzeo6@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"kennedys-response-to-past-conspiracy-theories\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Kennedy\u2019s response to past conspiracy theories<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000e3b6m541e7lbw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado was one of the lawmakers to bring the receipts of Kennedy\u2019s past statements to the hearing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000f3b6mkbavear0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When asked to respond to his previous statements that Covid-19 was a \u201cgenetically engineered bio-weapon that targets Black and white people but spared Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people,\u201d Kennedy responded: \u201cI didn\u2019t say it was deliberately targeted, I just quoted an NIH published study.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000g3b6mxksxrz9r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Pressed whether he said that Lyme disease is a \u201chighly likely, militarily engineered bio-weapon\u201d Kennedy said, \u201cI probably did say that.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000h3b6mjels4jzz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Then Bennet turned to his Republican colleagues after Kennedy\u2019s answer: \u201cI want them to hear it.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000i3b6mwh6p1pa3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy denied that he said that exposure to pesticide causes children to become transgender, but Bennet pushed back, \u201cI have the record that I\u2019ll give to the chairman.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000j3b6mqq2fhznr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy said he was not sure if he wrote in his book that it is \u201cundeniable that African AIDS is an entirely different disease from Western AIDS.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000l3b6m9xl567q8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere\u2019s a long record here, and there\u2019s a lot in that record that he\u2019s trying to cover up with the opening statement that you heard and with his claim that he\u2019s quote unquote pro-vax now,\u201d Bennet said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm6icksjm00263b6mwfs5l6w5@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"kennedy-tries-to-clear-up-position-on-abortion\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Kennedy tries to clear up position on abortion<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000n3b6mma11wqu2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy sought to reassure leery conservatives about his stance on abortion, saying he agrees with the president that \u201cstates should control abortion.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000o3b6m8wlswa6j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI agree with President Trump that every abortion is a tragedy. I agree with him that we cannot be a moral nation if we have 1.2 million abortions a year. I agree with him that the states should control abortion,\u201d Kennedy said at his confirmation hearing Wednesday, in response to Republican Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma asking if he supports Trump\u2019s previous stance on Title X.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000q3b6mljeabpj9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the same line of questioning, Kennedy also suggested he would back protections for \u201cconscientious objections\u201d for providers who refuse to provide reproductive health care services they find morally objectionable.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000r3b6mertpt4yt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI don\u2019t know anybody who would want to have a doctor performing a surgery that the doctor is morally opposed to,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000s3b6msgvfx3px@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cForcing somebody to participate in a medical procedure as a provider that they believe is murder does not make any sense to me,\u201d he added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000t3b6mcsnbpci5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire attacked Kennedy\u2019s shifting stance on abortion rights.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000u3b6m0m41aa1d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt is remarkable that you have such a long record of fighting for women\u2019s reproductive freedom, and really great that my Republican colleagues are so open to voting for a pro-choice HHS Secretary,\u201d Hassan said after citing several quotes of him previously voicing stances supportive of abortion rights.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000v3b6m9viyk1gf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy reiterated that he agrees with Trump that \u201cevery abortion is a tragedy.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000w3b6mg5udnwfp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen was it that you decided to sell out the values you\u2019ve had your whole life in order to be given power by President Trump?\u201d Hassan asked.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm6icr21s002x3b6m835nqeto@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"kennedy-sidestepping-on-key-commitments\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Kennedy sidestepping on key commitments<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000y3b6mhp1mpii8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy refused to give clear answers about whether he would disavow his own financial interests if confirmed or purge HHS employees for political purposes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb1000z3b6md1uooubw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy gave mixed answers when Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts asked him if he would pledge to not take any compensation from lawsuits against drug companies while he is secretary or for four years afterward, as his personal financial stake in some lawsuits has come under scrutiny.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb100103b6meg2ytpik@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When Warren asked Kennedy to commit to not taking any compensation from any lawsuits during and following his would-be term, Kennedy said, \u201cI will certainly commit to that while I\u2019m secretary. But I do want to clarify something, because you\u2019re making me sound like a shill.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb200113b6muxf2070s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy\u2019s financial disclosures, filed as part of his potential role in the incoming administration and during his brief run for the presidency last year, show he has earned more than $2.4 million from litigation brought by Wisner Baum, a law firm whose specialties include pursuing pharmaceutical drug injury cases.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb200123b6m8pirw6qh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But as Warren\u2019s line of questioning continued, Kennedy\u2019s answers failed to address the senator\u2019s concerns.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb200133b6mi3kis2df@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI\u2019m not going to agree to not sue drug companies or anybody,\u201d Kennedy said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb200143b6mfq1wanhn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Warren pressed further: \u201cI am asking you to commit right now that you will not take a financial stake in every one of those lawsuits so that what you do as secretary will also benefit you financially down the line.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb200153b6m567oj95p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            To which Kennedy replied, \u201cI\u2019ll comply with all the ethical guidance.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb200163b6m8b1zlo9p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Warren was not satisfied with his answer.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb200173b6mn4mxkeal@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cNo one should be fooled,\u201d Warren responded. \u201cAnd for all of his talk about \u2018follow the science\u2019 and his promise that he won\u2019t interfere with those of us who want to vaccinate our kids. The bottom line is the same. Kennedy can kill off access to vaccines and make millions of dollars while he does it. Kids might die, but Robert Kennedy could keep cashing in.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb200183b6m1fyshs6f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The panel\u2019s GOP chairman, Sen. Mike Crapo of Idaho, said that Kennedy has gone through the Office of Government Ethics process as has every other Cabinet nominee.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb200193b6mfti71m7w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia also pressed Kennedy over what federal employees he plans to fire at the Department of Health and Human Services as concerns have arisen over the purge of federal workers conducted by the Trump administration.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb2001a3b6mhbuu68da@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy has said he wants to fire and replace 600 workers from the National Institutes of Health, and Warner revealed that in their private meeting, Kennedy said he wants to get rid of 2,200 federal employees from HHS.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb2001b3b6m7wnr1zmw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When asked to pledge to not get rid of employees working on food safety or cyber attacks in health care, Kennedy did not give a yes-or-no answer but said, \u201cI will commit to not firing anybody who\u2019s doing their job.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb2001c3b6mfoc130qk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Warner then pressed to clarify if those decisions would be based on his opinion, political agenda, or President Donald Trump\u2019s wishes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb2001d3b6mo2ppk6j3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBased on my opinion,\u201d Kennedy responded.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb2001e3b6modfo6gdf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy also would not commit to not freezing grant funding for community health centers, as the fallout from the Trump administration\u2019s federal aid freeze remains unclear, and instead said, \u201cThe White House has made clear that no funds are going to be denied to any American for benefits in any program.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm6ictxrz00303b6mnmrbd8ef@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"where-democrats-and-kennedy-found-common-ground\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Where Democrats and Kennedy found common ground<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb2001g3b6mndek19xd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Notably, Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, who went to the University of Virginia School of Law with Kennedy, used his dedicated time in the spotlight to give a speech rather than ask Kennedy questions.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb2001h3b6mvu54a7if@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Despite the overall tense hearing, which included interruptions from protesters, Democrats signaled they found some common ground when Kennedy outlined his views on the chronic disease epidemic and how he wants to implement a nutrition-oriented disease prevention plan.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb2001i3b6mzbadqy6n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Even Bennet, who interrogated Kennedy, also conceded \u201cMr. Kennedy is right\u201d when it comes to the declining health in the United States and poor food quality offered to children.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb2001j3b6mzx24q63w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            No Democrats have said that they will support Kennedy, but some have suggested they are open to it.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ic9eb2001l3b6msvxgqk1u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Independent Sen.
