Kennedy, has written multiple anti-vaccine books, lobbied Congress to give parents exemptions from vaccinating their children and made widely reported, unsubstantiated claims over the past 20 years that vaccines are inadequately tested, including suggesting that polio vaccines increase susceptibility to future polio cases. He has, however, recently told a crowd of reporters that he was \u201call for\u201d the polio vaccine and downplayed his anti-vaccine record to senators this week.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6kye2bc00053b6mg223xh4v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Here is what we know about polio as a disease, its vaccines and the likely number of lives saved through inoculation.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm6kyfht700083b6mwqz3256l@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"what-is-polio\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        What is polio?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6ky996w00003b6megxij8uo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In its early stages, poliomyelitis \u2014 known as polio \u2014 causes fatigue, headaches, stiffness and limb pain after exposure to the poliovirus, according to the World Health Organization, or WHO. One in 200 infections leads to paralysis, and around 5% to 10% of paralyzed patients die when their breathing muscles become immobilized. The disease mainly affects children under 5 years old, but anyone who is unvaccinated is susceptible if exposed.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6kyfw95000f3b6ma0oapkpa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the 19th and 20th centuries, frequent polio outbreaks made it one of the most feared diseases in the US, with the biggest outbreak killing more than 3,000 people in 1952, according to US public health data.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6kyfplc000d3b6m6svfg9du@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Here\u2019s a look at the disease\u2019s trend over the past 100 years or so:    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm6kyunbo00013b6mrob0jiio@published\" data-component-name=\"graphic\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-1OY7C\" class=\"graphic__chart-anchor\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm6kyv1mt00033b6mvezbgzik@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"preventing-polio\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Preventing polio<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6kyh7eu00003b6m9uwja4wf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The first polio vaccine was developed in the early 1950s by Dr. Jonas Salk and approved for use throughout the US in 1955. It is an injectable, inactivated polio vaccine that is still used in some countries today.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6kyvccd00083b6m7bsmccru@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Dr. Albert Sabin developed a second,<strong> <\/strong>oral vaccine, and it was introduced as part of a vaccine schedule in the US in 1961. It was so cost-effective and easy to administer that it rapidly became the most common polio vaccine for national immunization programs around the world. While it\u2019s not used in the US anymore, it is especially effective for use in developing countries.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6kyv74j00063b6mstd464s1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Here are the differences between the two most commonly available polio prevention options:    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm6kyvzv3000f3b6m8kw8gyxn@published\" data-component-name=\"graphic\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm6kyvzv3000f3b6m8kw8gyxn@published\" class=\"graphic__anchor\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20250129-polio-vaccines\/index.html\" data-type=\"dailygraphics\" data-slug=\"20250129-polio-vaccines\" data-pym-src=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20250129-polio-vaccines\/index.html\"><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6kyvjmp000d3b6mqrljqtx3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Polio vaccines have helped eradicate the wild form of the disease in many regions of the world, including the Americas, Europe, Southeast Asia and Africa, according to WHO. The former Czechoslovakia was the first country to demonstrate that nationwide eradication of wild poliovirus was possible in 1960,<strong> <\/strong>due to a robust vaccination campaign in which about 93% of children received the oral vaccine. Wild poliovirus is still endemic in some areas, including Afghanistan and Pakistan.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm6kz56ig000h3b6moeyucz2l@published\" data-component-name=\"graphic\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-pA2lz\" class=\"graphic__chart-anchor\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm6kyvfhv000a3b6m4n44wv88@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"what-would-a-world-without-the-polio-vaccines-look-like\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        What would a world without the polio vaccines look like?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6kz7e9a000n3b6ma0jn0vho@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The polio vaccines prevented 29 million cases of paralytic polio between 1960 and 2021, compared with a counterfactual world with no vaccines, according to researchers\u2019 estimates.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm6kz9crb000q3b6mujukm4h7@published\" data-component-name=\"graphic\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-hxOeq\" class=\"graphic__chart-anchor\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6kzd5ho000v3b6m3tomwnsc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Broadening out to look at all vaccines, a landmark May 2024 study led by WHO estimated that 154 million lives had been saved by immunization programs covering diseases including smallpox, tuberculosis, measles and polio over the past 50 years, including 101 million infants.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6kzee1g00133b6m01c7kdlg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After a contentious few days of hearings in front of two Senate committees, Kennedy\u2019s nomination could see a full vote on the Senate floor soon. If all Senate Democrats vote against his confirmation as HHS secretary, he can afford to lose only three Republican votes. Former Republican leader Sen. Mitch McConnell, of Kentucky, is a polio survivor who<strong> <\/strong>seemed to warn Kennedy away from the polio issue last year: \u201cThe polio vaccine has saved millions of lives and held out the promise of eradicating a terrible disease,\u201d he said in a statement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6kzee1g00143b6md9ard03g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cEfforts to undermine public confidence in proven cures are not just uninformed \u2013 they\u2019re dangerous.
