Even US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has a long history of questioning vaccines, had concerns, the sources said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87rljnf0002356mds4kxdt7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Weldon also said in the statement, which was first reported by CBS, that Kennedy was \u201cvery upset\u201d about the withdrawal.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87edi1h00083b6mw1b2c257@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Health experts had sharply criticized Weldon\u2019s nomination to lead the nation\u2019s key public health agency since it was announced last year. Weldon served 14 years in Congress, representing a district near Tampa from 1995 to 2009, and had introduced legislation that would have shifted vaccine safety oversight away from the CDC. He also repeatedly raised questions about the safety of vaccines that had already been studied.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87i76i400143b6msggs9crb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In his statement, Weldon said some Republican senators had expressed reservations about his nomination, claiming that in a meeting with Republican staffers this week, those from Maine Sen. Susan Collins\u2019 office \u201crepeatedly accused me of being \u2018antivax,\u2019 even though I reminded them that I actually give hundreds of vaccines every year in my medical practice.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87rpbmy0009356mtyve2rin@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cMore than 20 years ago, while in Congress, I raised some concerns about childhood vaccine safety, and for some reason Collins staff suddenly couldn\u2019t get over that no matter what I said back,\u201d Weldon said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87sx28v000d356mtemdcuvk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Collins\u2019 office didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment. A source familiar with the meeting said that Weldon\u2019s representation of the interaction was inaccurate and that Collins\u2019 staff had actually been asking Weldon how he\u2019d respond to questions about the perception that he\u2019s anti-vaccine.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87thxfh0019356m4lu3cf8z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Weldon also displayed a lack of knowledge of basic facts about the CDC in the Tuesday meeting, including all the authorities of the CDC director, according to the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the meeting happened behind closed doors. Weldon said at the meeting that he had not developed a strategic plan for the CDC and intended to learn on the job if he was confirmed, the person said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm87ty1yl0001356mvq6d02hy@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"weldon-still-questions-vaccine-safety\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Weldon still questions vaccine safety<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87sxqjq000g356mx439n6py@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Weldon said in his statement Thursday that Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Republican from Louisiana who chairs the HELP Committee, \u201cwas also throwing around the claim that I was \u2018antivax\u2019 or that I believed that vaccines cause autism which I have never said.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87t05gv000m356m1ufbut97@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Robust scientific studies have repeatedly debunked any link between vaccines and autism. Autism rates have been rising, reaching 1 in 36 children by age 8 in 2020, but researchers say a key driver has been improvement in identifying and diagnosing autism.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87uj9rt00053b6mt7azyufq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Weldon also didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment on the 2019 interview.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87t1bqh000p356mpzylt2rm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But even in his own statement Thursday, as Weldon protested the perception of him as anti-vaccine, he cast doubt on CDC research that found a preservative previously used in vaccines, called thimerosal, showed no evidence of harm \u2013 though US health agencies agreed it should be removed in 1999 \u201cas a precautionary measure.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87t28ih000s356mcu7vy551@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIf confirmed, I was planning on going back into the CDC database and quietly investigate this claim,\u201d Weldon said in his statement. \u201cIronically, I was hoping to find no evidence of corruption of the science at CDC. Maybe in hearing it from me, members of the public might be reassured.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87t5kba000v356mzt6psjtv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Weldon also expressed support for Andrew Wakefield, the author of a discredited and retracted paper suggesting that the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is connected to autism.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87t7djh000y356mqaeefltm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe science does not support Dr. Weldon\u2019s assertions,\u201d said Dr. Walter Orenstein, a professor emeritus in the Emory School of Medicine who worked at the CDC for 26 years, including 16 as director of the US Immunization Program. \u201cThere have been numerous studies to look at the adverse impacts of thimerosal and measles-containing vaccines, and the conclusions have been that they do not cause autism.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87tb8an0011356mvfbnv24r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Weldon also claimed in his statement that Cassidy \u2013 a doctor who champions the safety and efficacy of vaccines and said he voted to confirm Kennedy only after being given guarantees that he wouldn\u2019t upend childhood vaccinations in the US \u2013 had \u201casked that my nomination be withdrawn.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87tgd5m0016356mg27ta8z4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A spokesperson from Cassidy\u2019s office said the decision to pull Weldon\u2019s nomination \u201cdid not come at the request of Senator Cassidy,\u201d who the spokesperson said had been looking forward to Thursday\u2019s hearing.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm87i1lc1000q3b6mlez3wtc2@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"weldons-past-raised-questions\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Weldon\u2019s past raised questions<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87exyfs000m3b6mj1567lxl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Weldon had long questioned the safety and efficacy of vaccines.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87i4a65000v3b6mvxbpza5v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2007, Weldon introduced the Vaccine Safety and Public Confidence Assurance Act, which aimed to create an \u201cAgency for Vaccine Safety Evaluation\u201d within HHS, independent of the CDC. \u201cThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is responsible for promoting both high immunization rates and vaccine safety, duties perceived by some to constitute a conflict of interest,\u201d the legislation noted.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87i497h000t3b6mcacyicvy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s dangerous to put someone in charge at CDC who believes the lie that our rigorously tested childhood vaccine schedule is somehow exposing kids to toxic levels of mercury or causing autism,\u201d Murray said in a statement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87i4a65000w3b6mzq9vm6z3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia, recalled a run-in with Weldon during his time on the CDC\u2019s Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices, a board of independent experts who advise the agency on how to use vaccines to control diseases.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87i4a65000x3b6mrfzjz4wi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He said Weldon \u201cbelieved strongly that [the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine] was the cause of autism. And he believed \u2026 that if you separate that vaccine into its three component parts, that you can avoid autism, which, of course, is absurd, because already studies had shown that you were at no greater risk of autism if you\u2019d gotten that vaccine or you hadn\u2019t.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm87i0bcx000o3b6mjdwlq3n7@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"uncertainty-about-next-nominee\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Uncertainty about next nominee<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87l45mg00023b6m8pndd2u0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It\u2019s not clear whom the White House will nominate to lead the CDC.
