Kennedy Jr. this week made his strongest endorsement yet of the measles vaccine amid an ongoing outbreak that has killed three and infected more than 600 people across the US.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qh00023b6om03vv4h2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But his recent push for people to get vaccinated for measles stands in stark contrast to Kennedy\u2019s years of work against measles vaccines, including suing the state of New York for its vaccine mandates, and making numerous claims that the shot is dangerous and unnecessary.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi00033b6otdssjch7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy\u2019s comments on X last Sunday that the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, \u201cis the most effective way to prevent the spread of measles\u201d set off vaccine critics who saw the statement as a betrayal of the health secretary\u2019s longtime views on vaccine safety.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi00043b6ov1zbi0cu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBobby Kennedy was our founder, but Bobby Kennedy is now the Secretary of HHS,\u201d Mary Holland, CEO of the anti-vaccine group Children\u2019s Health Defense, said in a video statement. \u201cHe certainly left off that in my personal experience, and in the personal experience of many people at CHD, the measles, mumps, rubella vaccine was extremely injurious.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi00053b6oenstuw38@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Holland went on to repeat disproven claims that the MMR vaccine causes autism.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi00063b6o2lgu5iiw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The health secretary followed up this Thursday with a Fox News interview, where he told host Martha MacCallum that it is \u201cvery hard to tell\u201d whether measles deaths this year could have been averted with vaccinations. \u201cWe need to do better at treating kids who have this disease, and not just saying the only answer is vaccination.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi00073b6onnjx5zvm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He also discussed the health agency\u2019s \u201cmassive research and testing\u201d plan to find the causes of autism by this September, a project he said will probe vaccinations along with environmental exposures, food and societal factors.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi00083b6ovd7ren4j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While Kennedy has been most critical of Covid-19 vaccines in recent years, MMR immunizations have been one of his earliest and most consistent targets for misinformation and alarm<strong> <\/strong>over the last two decades.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000a3b6ow0d05k65@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As Kennedy wrote in his 2023 book with Brian Hooker, Vax-Unvax, \u201cThe MMR vaccine is the tip of the spear regarding the modern debate around vaccine safety.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000b3b6o6sl8h55q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Here are three ways Kennedy questioned the vaccine\u2019s safety and the severity of measles infections themselves.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm9d8nmji00163b6orlykphih@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"linking-mmr-vaccines-to-debunked-risks\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Linking MMR vaccines to debunked risks<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000d3b6oaygtqxye@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The theory that MMR vaccines led to autism first took hold with a since-retracted 1998 study by Andrew Wakefield. As the disbarred British physician rose to prominence in the anti-vaccine world, so did Kennedy \u2014 who repeatedly defended his debunked research.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000e3b6osuqtuggd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWakefield [and his co-researchers] did not state that MMR causes autism,\u201d Kennedy and Hooker wrote in their 2023 book. \u201cThey merely pointed out the timing of the vaccine before the onset of symptoms.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000f3b6ospe7d9o7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ten of the 12 co-authors on the study issued a retraction in 2004, saying it established no causal link between the MMR shot and autism. Infants with autism typically start showing signs between 12-24 months of age; the first dose of the MMR vaccine is usually given when a child is 12 months old.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000g3b6of0agqx8j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy, like Wakefield, has asserted over the years that MMR vaccines lead to myriad adverse events besides autism.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000h3b6ofbapf1kn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            MMR vaccines have an \u201cunconscionably high injury rate\u201d Kennedy wrote on CHD\u2019s website in 2019, citing gastrointestinal and respiratory complications from a mid-1970s study. Those are symptoms \u201cthat might persuade rational consumers to choose the infections over the vaccine,\u201d he added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000i3b6ojn60p8fz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            This March, speaking to Fox News\u2019 Sean Hannity, Kennedy repeated the claim that the vaccines themselves are as risky at the virus. \u201c[The MMR vaccine] causes all the illnesses that measles itself causes,\u201d and leads to \u201cdeaths every year,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000j3b6ouswa0bu3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            There are no reported deaths from the vaccine among healthy people, according to the Infectious Disease Society of America.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm9d8mveo00133b6ox9hk6e1j@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"downplaying-severity-of-measles-infections\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Downplaying severity of measles infections<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000l3b6of4scso2j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy has repeatedly said that measles outbreaks are not unusual, infection is not severe in healthy people, and deaths with measles are due to other causes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000m3b6oqsjfvqvg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIf you look at the kids in Africa who die from measles, or these other infectious diseases, they\u2019re all malnourished,\u201d he said on Joe Rogan\u2019s podcast in June 2023. \u201cIt\u2019s hard for a disease to kill a healthy person; it\u2019s hard for an infectious disease to kill a healthy person with a rugged immune system.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000n3b6ogdxquuxu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            State health departments reported no underlying health conditions reported in the three US deaths this year, the first measles deaths in the country in a decade. All three, two children in Texas and an adult in New Mexico, were unvaccinated. In the Fox interview Thursday, Kennedy suggested at least one of the children had prior medical complications.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000o3b6ogfcz2qxs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy also this year dismissed the notion that many died from measles in a 2019 Samoan outbreak that killed 83 and infected more than 5,000 people.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000p3b6oldodpf5l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Details of Kennedy\u2019s visit to Samoa months before the 2019 outbreak resurfaced during his Senate confirmation hearings. He went to the country following an invitation from an anti-vaccine advocate, but denies he campaigned against vaccination while he was there. He also denied to senators that dozens of people died from the virus.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000q3b6o0d2i3lmy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cMost of the people did not have measles,\u201d when tissue samples were tested, he told Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) \u201cWe don\u2019t know what was killing them.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000r3b6o07t9q5ea@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That claim is a \u201ctotal fabrication,\u201d Samoa Director-General of Health Dr. Alec Ekeroma told The Associated Press. Ekeroma also said Kennedy met with anti-vaccine advocates while there.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm9d8m97m00103b6oqawuq37c@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"lawsuit-over-mmr-vaccine-requirements\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Lawsuit over MMR vaccine requirements<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000t3b6o7zydky14@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kennedy, along with former federal prosecutor Michael Sussman, sued the state of New York in 2019 to oppose vaccine requirement for school-age children. The state\u2019s legislature passed the law, which removed religious exemptions, amid a measles outbreak that year among Brooklyn\u2019s Orthodox Jewish community that infected nearly 800 people.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000u3b6o9nuzf1os@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A state Supreme Court justice rejected the suit days later. The Kennedy-chaired Children\u2019s Health Defense vowed to keep fighting.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000v3b6oe086z78i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That same year, Kennedy rallied with Washington state residents against a MMR vaccine mandate for children attending school. At the time, there were roughly 50 reported measles cases in the state. It spread to 71 people, most of them unvaccinated children, during the monthslong outbreak.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000w3b6oder5mnch@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As health secretary, Kennedy has maintained that position that vaccination should be a choice despite the spread of measles across 23 states.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9d8m1qi000x3b6omwegd64z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe federal government\u2019s position, my position, is that people should get the measles vaccine, but the government should not be mandating those,\u201d Kennedy told CBS News April 8. \u201cI always said during my campaign \u2014 and every part, every public statement I\u2019ve made \u2014 I\u2019m not gonna take people\u2019s vaccines away from them.
