The move comes after a wave of concern and criticism about the threat to the longstanding study.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vwtl8v00043b6mu0p0fchs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For decades, the initiative \u2013 conducted by the National Institutes of Health \u2013 has tracked the health of tens of thousands of women to understand how to reduce the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and more in women after menopause.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vwtl8v00053b6mblp6ldc2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Seminal findings from the project have included the risks of using certain kinds of hormone therapy for menopause \u2013 helping prevent an estimated 126,000 breast cancer diagnoses \u2013 and the finding that vitamin D does not help prevent bone loss. The work has led to more than 2,400 scientific publications overall, shaping clinical practice and public health policies across multiple disciplines in the US.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vwtl8v00063b6mhsiyv53q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Monday, the program announced that HHS planned to terminate contracts with its regional centers in September, a move that would \u201csignificantly impact ongoing research and data collection.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vwtl8v00073b6maxc58pi1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Investigators were awaiting more details Thursday when an update from HHS indicated that plans had changed.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vxj8z800033b6ml8ay7n31@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In a social media post Thursday, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said that \u201cwe are not terminating this study.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vxk0np00063b6m4rikskv0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe all recognize that this project is mission critical for women\u2019s health,\u201d he wrote.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vwtl8v00093b6mirsyzw0t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Experts say that cuts to one of the largest long-term studies on women\u2019s health would be a critical loss, jeopardizing invaluable datasets and important studies already in the works.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vwtl8v000a3b6m97or0i68@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe already have serious gaps in women\u2019s health that need to be addressed,\u201d Dr. Stephanie Faubion, director of the Mayo Clinic\u2019s Women\u2019s Health Specialty Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, and medical director for The Menopause Society, said when the funding cuts were announced.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vwtl8v000b3b6mny2es5g9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Trump administration has identified addressing chronic disease as one of its top priorities, and the Women\u2019s Health Initiative has a unique ability to do that.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vwtl8v000c3b6mg79px205@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen you compare a person to themselves over time, it allows you to much more definitively answer questions about the causes or the factors that contribute to the development of those kinds of diseases that we\u2019re all worried about, whether it\u2019s heart disease, cancer, dementia, diabetes, fractures, things like that,\u201d said Dr. Rebecca Thurston, a prominent women\u2019s health researcher. \u201cIt\u2019s the ability to follow a large number of people over time.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vwtl8v000d3b6m8asf0bdg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The launch of the Women\u2019s Health Initiative in 1992 marked a major shift in the way medical research regarded women, experts say.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vwtl8v000e3b6moso5a7ur@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cFor many years, we thought about women as essentially small men when it came to many chronic diseases,\u201d Thurston said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vwtl8v000f3b6m1hz7k3iv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            There had been a prevailing view that women\u2019s health was only about \u201cbikini medicine,\u201d focused on reproduction and the areas of the body that a bikini covers, she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vwtl8v000g3b6mbmi23376@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI think the Women\u2019s Health Initiative, and subsequently other studies, have really underscored that things like cardiovascular disease, stroke, dementia and brain aging, they have unique features in women and unique contributors,\u201d Thurston said. \u201cThat means that we really have to study women specifically, that they\u2019re not interchangeable with men, and that women\u2019s health is more than bikini medicine.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vwtl8v000h3b6mjodzmpk7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The historical lack of inclusion of women in medical research is why funding for a project like the Women\u2019s Health Initiative is so important, said Dr. Stella Dantas, president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vwtl8v000i3b6m96ix9w1o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWHI centers have become a source of invaluable data and drive research on treatments to address some of the most common health concerns for postmenopausal women, such as heart disease and breast cancer,\u201d she said in a statement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vwtl8v000k3b6merp5o6xo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Thurston says that some major findings from the Women\u2019s Health Initiative were being published at a formative time in her career and led to the work she does now, researching menopause, cardiovascular disease and brain aging.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm9vwtl8v000l3b6mhnl3f2zh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis study has been answering really important questions on really prevalent health issues,\u201d she said. \u201cWe need to keep the science going. It\u2019s so important if we want to prevent heart disease, prevent cancer, keep our bones healthy, keep our brains healthy.
