He was exhausted and hopeless. He missed his grandkids.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanew0gx00013b6n9gdwor07@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It kept him alive, but it didn\u2019t feel like living.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy00043b6m3t98ittx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Desperate for another option, he found a surprising alternative: an organ from a pig.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy00053b6mz8gxb2yd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Andrews, 67, is a pioneer of a new kind of medicine. In January, he had an experimental cross-species transplant of a kidney from a genetically modified pig. He is one of only a handful of patients who have undergone the experimental procedure. For now, he\u2019s the lone person in the United States known to be living with a pig kidney.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy00073b6m67359izc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Andrews knew that there was a risk to trying something so new, but if the kidney gave him just one more day free from dialysis, it was worth it \u2014 for him and for fellow patients.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy00083b6m8foh7j82@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis will do something for humanity,\u201d Andrews said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader-elevate\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmanb4qbe002p3b6mm5vlaxjo@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"pick-a-box\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018Pick a box\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy000a3b6m2szf47wh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Andrews had been living with diabetes since the 1990s, managing the condition with insulin. About 2\u00bd years ago, he went to the doctor feeling unusually tired. Tests showed that he had stage 3 kidney failure \u2014 his kidneys were still working but less efficiently than they should. He was relieved to learn that it was manageable with medication, monitoring and lifestyle changes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy000b3b6msczywxmk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But about a month later, a doctor delivered more bad news: Andrews\u2019 kidney disease had rapidly progressed to end-stage disease. On days off, he\u2019d sleep. By the time he woke up, he\u2019d have to start the process all over again.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy000g3b6mwxew95am@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When he thinks about his experience with dialysis, Andrews appreciates what the doctors and nurses did to keep him alive. But when he kept having to sit in that oversized green chair hooked up to the dialysis machine, the whole situation hurt his spirit, too.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy000h3b6mqg2kdxnw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He was too tired to walk or get groceries. He couldn\u2019t eat. Even in the few hours he felt OK, his immune system was so weak that he had to avoid crowds. He also kept hearing his father\u2019s voice in his mind, telling him to stop complaining and start doing something about his situation.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader-elevate\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmanb424e002m3b6m581gj4l3@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"i-know-what-end-stage-means\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018I know what end-stage means\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy000m3b6muwm2xh6m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Andrews learned that his odds of getting a human kidney donation were not good.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy000n3b6m34na9r5l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Nearly 90,0000 people are on the waiting list for a kidney in the US. Most don\u2019t get a transplant because they become too sick or die while waiting for a match.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy000o3b6m5xzxsd14@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Andrews\u2019 chances were slimmer than most because of his rare blood type. People typically wait about three to five years for a donor kidney. For him, it would likely be seven to 10 years. Doctors thought his body could take only five years of dialysis.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy000q3b6mfmcv3szq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI was a little short there,\u201d Andrews said. \u201cI know what end-stage means.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy000r3b6mfbnmk5j1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But his research gave him hope. Massachusetts General Hospital was also investigating animal alternatives. He demanded that the hospital liaison put him in touch with one of the doctors from that project: Dr. Leonardo Riella, medical director of kidney transplantation at Mass General.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy000s3b6mu1migh6k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When they first met, Andrews was \u201cvery frail,\u201d Riella said. He arrived in a wheelchair. He prayed. His wife, Karen, also had to agree: If they got the green light, she would need to sign consent papers. On the slim chance he got a virus from the organ, she\u2019d be exposed to it, too.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy00123b6mnbvk30gw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI was a little taken aback by that,\u201d Karen said. But she didn\u2019t have any doubt that this transplant, though unusual, was the right way to go.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy00133b6muz8yae08@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt has to be better than dialysis,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was just feeling so awful all the time.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader-elevate\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmanb3cbj002g3b6m50skimez@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-new-birthday\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        A new birthday<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy00153b6mz6vnmfzj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In January, it was finally time.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy00163b6mfrop1fya@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On surgery day, his family hugged and kissed him good-bye. Karen gave him a high-five and wished him luck.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy00173b6mgehl3q19@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The procedure was supposed to take four hours, but only about two hours and 15 minutes in, Karen said, her phone rang. Everyone in the operating room started cheering.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001b3b6m99wl94rr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cOf course, I started bawling like a baby,\u201d Karen said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001c3b6m4mwjjubb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It all happened so fast that even the doctors who did the surgery were surprised.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001d3b6m8qa25yiv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt worked right away, and the numbers started getting better,\u201d Riella said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001e3b6ml5hfezgj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After waking up from surgery, Andrews felt \u201creenergized and revitalized.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001f3b6m6fmfrbwe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI was alive, and I hadn\u2019t been in a long time,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001g3b6m8bk9xgag@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He hopped off the bed and tap-danced across the room, he said. His mind felt clear.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001h3b6mvrcka5bt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt was a miracle,\u201d Andrews said. So much so, he declared that he had a new birthday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001i3b6ml4vkhpun@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI said \u2018look at me, it\u2019s like I\u2019m like a new man,\u2019 \u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s like new birth. I said, \u2018I\u2019ve got a new birthday. 1\/25\/25 is my new birthday.\u2019 \u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader-elevate\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmane3mbh000d3b6mtjgqholc@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"now-i-can-do-anything-i-want\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018Now I can do anything I want\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001j3b6mmt7enzkw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After the transplant, Andrews spent a week in the hospital but only out of an abundance of caution.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001k3b6mci843jr2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the months since, he\u2019s had a few \u201csmall bumps in the road,\u201d including a three-week hospital stay. But the pig kidney does what a kidney from a living human donor would do.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001l3b6mnq7xe1gu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Life is returning to normal. Andrews cooks, vacuums and takes long walks with his dog, Cupcake.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001m3b6m2y5z915d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He currently takes more than 50 pills every day as the doctors try to figure out the type of medications he\u2019ll need with his new kidney. But living without dialysis has made such a difference.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001n3b6ms5wxs3lh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBasically, I was just sleeping, sick all the time. Now I can do anything I want,\u201d Andrews said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001o3b6m128588nc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He even lets himself picture a future. He can\u2019t wait to see his grandkids again.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001p3b6mbo87vneu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey saw me at the lowest, and now they\u2019ll be able to see me alive and laughing and carrying on like Grandpa does,\u201d Andrews said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001q3b6mkdjn1eid@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            If all goes well, he hopes to take Karen to Europe in a year. He\u2019s still on the wait list for a human organ. If the pig kidney can act as a bridge that keeps him healthy enough to wait for a match from a human donor, that would be a medical first \u2014 and a success.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001w3b6mvyb5rfej@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Andrews is the fourth living patient in the US to get a genetically modified pig kidney transplant, and he won\u2019t be the last. In addition to the ongoing trial at Mass General in conjunction with biotech firm eGenesis, United Therapeutics Corp \u2013 the other main biotech company helping create the pig kidneys \u2013 announced in February that it would be allowed to start its own clinical trials with New York University.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanv2g6f00033b6nzvnkrz0b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In March 2024, Richard Slayman became the first living patient in the world to get a genetically modified pig kidney. The operation at Mass General went well, but he died two months later from causes not related to the transplant.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001y3b6mgnzd3kb2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Doctors said they learned a lot from their experience with Slayman. He had scarring on his heart after eight years of dialysis, Riella said, and it\u2019s probably important to get patients like Andrews, who haven\u2019t needed dialysis as long.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmantqqty00003b6nnua2387k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In April 2024, Lisa Pisano became the first person to receive a mechanical heart pump as well as a gene-edited pig kidney. The organ failed due to limited blood flow and was removed the next month. She died in July 2024.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy001z3b6m4mf9tsiz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Then, in November 2024, NYU transplanted 53-year-old Towana Looney with a genetically modified pig kidney. It functioned for four months and nine days, the longest yet, but doctors had to remove it in April when her immune system started to reject it.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy00203b6m5pb5qb04@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Figuring out how to manage rejection is going to be key, doctors say. The pig kidneys Andrews and Slayman got had 69 genomic edits, while Looney\u2019s had fewer. But he also remembers what it was like to sit for hours at the dialysis center.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy00263b6mjkv94irk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s hard to come to terms with mortality. You think \u2018ah, I can handle that\u2019 and everything, but it\u2019s tough,\u201d he said recently, back in the green chair where he underwent dialysis. \u201cIt was very tough to realize that was it.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy00273b6mndkr1yym@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI was going to die in this building.\u201d<em><\/em>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmanb2uyy00283b6mu67b6cva@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He found a way out.
