Are immigrant farm workers, who have accounted for many of the U.S. cases, more afraid to come forward for testing amid the Trump administration\u2019s deportation push? One person died, but most of the infected people had mild illnesses.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmavh199j00093b6mlbnmqq7f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The most recent infections confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were in early February in Nevada, Ohio and Wyoming.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmavh199j000a3b6m3656avjg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            California had been a hotspot, with three-quarters of the nation\u2019s infections in dairy cattle. But testing and cases among people have fallen off. At least 50 people were tested each month in late 2024, but just three people were tested in March, one in April and none in May so far, state records show. Overall, the state has confirmed H5N1 infections in 38 people, none after Jan. 14.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader-elevate\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmawd6h1a00043b6mw6urjczg@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"the-possible-natural-reason-bird-flu-cases-are-down\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        The possible natural reason bird flu cases are down<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmavh199j000b3b6m10o7stna@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            During a call with U.S. doctors this month, one CDC official noted that there is a seasonality to bird flu: Cases peak in the fall and early winter, possibly due to the migration patterns of wild birds that are primary spreaders of the virus.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmavh199j000c3b6mvhtg5jps@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That could mean the U.S. is experiencing a natural \u2014 maybe temporary \u2014 decline in cases.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmavh199j000d3b6mzx5bomz1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It\u2019s unlikely that a severe human infection, requiring hospitalization, would go unnoticed, said Michael Osterholm, a University of Minnesota expert on infectious diseases.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmavh199j000e3b6muk4nhhzf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            What\u2019s more, a patchwork system that monitors viruses in sewage and wastewater has suggested limited activity recently.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmavh199j000f3b6mldvrew71@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            New infections are still being detected in birds and cattle, but not as frequently as several months ago.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmavh199j000g3b6mrjizlzc5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cGiven the fact that the number of animal detections has fallen according to USDA data, it\u2019s not surprising that human cases have declined as well,\u201d the CDC said in a statement.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader-elevate\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmawd6qh700073b6mv8fnh9fu@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"are-government-cuts-affecting-bird-flu-monitoring\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Are government cuts affecting bird flu monitoring?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmavh199j000h3b6mi0uzqs18@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Dr. Gregory Gray said he wasn\u2019t concerned about the CDC not identifying new cases in months.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmavh199j000i3b6mu1tz3fy5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI don\u2019t think that anybody\u2019s hiding anything,\u201d said Gray, an infectious disease speicialist at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmavh199j000j3b6m52qjrvro@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But Osterholm and some other experts think it\u2019s likely that at least some milder infections are going undetected. She recently released a paper reviewing bird flu in infections in cats between 2004 and 2024.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmavh199j000x3b6msekfbi4h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Barn cats that died after drinking raw milk were one of the first signs that dairy cows were becoming infected with bird flu in 2024. Since then, the Agriculture Department has confirmed more than 120 domestic cats infected with the virus across the U.S.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmavh199j000y3b6mxdiw2cw5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Infections have mostly been found in cats that died. Less is known about milder infections, whether cats can recover from bird flu \u2014 or whether the virus can spill over into people.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmavh199j000z3b6mvrgopec6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Coleman has been collecting blood samples from cats across the U.S. to see if they have evidence of previous exposure to the virus.
